REENACTMENT

Through the 90ies and 00ies, Reenactment has come to take up a prominent place on the contemporary art scene, where a major goal has been the renegotiation of the past: past incidents as well as the ideological connotations of such incidents. A past scenario reenacted in the present means something else than it did in its immediate context, because we see it through the optic of history and the incidents that followed.
As an introduction to the video-medium, the students were presented to a line of film works from the 20th century – Maya Deren’s “Meshes of the Afternoon”; Chris Marker’s “La Jetée”; Eija-Liisa Ahtila’s “Me/We, Okay, Gray”; Adam Davidson’s “The Lunch Date” og Gus Van Sant’s “Discipline of DE”. The students were then to pick a film to work with, and from that film to select one or more central sequence(s) to reenact.
Apart from giving the student an insight in some of the most prominent tendencies in the art and film of the 20th century, reenactment also serves as a good way of gaining practical experience with lighting, recording, editing etc. – when you reenact, the contents is already given allowing the student to pay her/his full attention to the technical aspects of film- and video production.
